THE PHOENIX
Standing high like the tower on the university lawn
I fell to the asphalt with both my guns drawn
Wrapped up in the past
And petrified of the future
I fled to the hill with the first willing suitor
Ahead of the curve
I lived for the praise
I took a wrong turn
And got lost in the maze
Long gone was the charming and poised self starter
I slept through my days
And smoked grass like my father
With the fence up high
And the moat well guarded
I mourned the loss of the life I discarded
Tired of remorse
But ashamed of my choices
I turned off my phone
I muted the voices
Alone in the trenches with forced self reliance
I shut out the world
And found peace in the silence
Deep in the darkness I found a new self
I turned on the lights
Put my guns on the shelf
With hollowed out eyes and a malnourished frame
I struck the match to set the castle ablaze
Out of the fire the phoenix emerged
I marched through the waters
My armor submerged
Covered in ash
In the wake I feel free
I bask in the sunlight
The past well behind me
I fell to the asphalt with both my guns drawn
Wrapped up in the past
And petrified of the future
I fled to the hill with the first willing suitor
Ahead of the curve
I lived for the praise
I took a wrong turn
And got lost in the maze
Long gone was the charming and poised self starter
I slept through my days
And smoked grass like my father
With the fence up high
And the moat well guarded
I mourned the loss of the life I discarded
Tired of remorse
But ashamed of my choices
I turned off my phone
I muted the voices
Alone in the trenches with forced self reliance
I shut out the world
And found peace in the silence
Deep in the darkness I found a new self
I turned on the lights
Put my guns on the shelf
With hollowed out eyes and a malnourished frame
I struck the match to set the castle ablaze
Out of the fire the phoenix emerged
I marched through the waters
My armor submerged
Covered in ash
In the wake I feel free
I bask in the sunlight
The past well behind me
